And this is just Southern Calif. This shows the main failure of GPS, it cannot be programmed for the TYPE of alert. GPS units are so limited that they are virtually useless.6-16-2010 California:
SAN DIEGO - Parole agents are struggling to deal with a backlog of more than 31,000 alerts from monitors worn by convicted sex offenders in Southern California.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Tuesday that records it obtained show some of the unresolved alerts date back to March.
Alerts are caused by low batteries, lost signals, cut straps on ankle bracelets and entry into forbidden zones - which can happen when an offender drives by a school.
State parole authorities decided to evaluate and document every alert after it was found that sex offender John Gardner had numerous alerts while wearing a GPS tracker but his parole agent never checked. Gardner pleaded guilty this year to killing two San Diego County teenagers.
Officials say they're working to reduce the backlog. ..Source..
