Two Potsdam women accused of threatening to accuse man of rape if he didn't give them a car
POTSDAM -- Two Potsdam women are accused of threatening to falsely accuse a man of rape if he didn't give them a car.
Village police say that Christine L. Laraby, 45, and Miranda L. Laraby, 17, threatened a man that they would report to police that he had physically abused and raped Miranda Laraby if he did not sign over his vehicle to the defendants with a note saying that they had paid him $500 cash for it.
Police say the defendants subsequently took possession of the man's 1997 Subaru Legacy.
The police allege that the women subsequently told the victim that if he did not buy new tires for the vehicle and give them $500, they would carry through on their earlier threat.
Both women were charged with second-degree coercion on May 27. They were arraigned in Potsdam Village Court and released on their own recognizance with orders of protection prohibiting them from having any further contact with the victim.
The Larabys were to appear in village court today. ..Source.. by North Country Now.com

Former Jackson stripper and her father bound over for trial in sex extortion case
1-28-2011 Michigan:
A former Jackson stripper and her father were ordered Thursday to stand trial for allegedly pressuring a "lap dance" customer to pay $2,500 after a sexual encounter in a motel.
Jennifer Allan, 24, and her father, David Allan, 50, were bound over for trial on extortion charges after a preliminary examination in Jackson County District Court.
Judge Joseph Filip added charges of conspiracy to commit extortion after testimony from four witnesses.
"Clearly it's a conspiracy with each other," Filip said.
The defendants are accused of collecting $2,500 in three installments from Theodore Bachakes, 25, of Dexter after he was threatened with a false accusation of rape.
Bachakes testified that he was "a regular patron" of Dr. Don's Famous Door, a downtown Jackson strip club. He met Jennifer Allan, a dancer, at the club last summer and often paid her $20 for "lap dances."
On Dec. 17, he testified, they met at Motel 6 and had sex. Afterward, he said, she threatened to accuse him of rape unless he gave her $500. He paid the money that same day.
Later a man identified by police as David Allan called Bachakes and convinced him to pay $1,500 more. A third payment of $500 was made after another contact with David Allan.
When David Allan asked for another $2,500, Bachakes filed a police report.
Detective Sgt. Christopher Boulter of the Blackman Township Department of Public Safety contacted Jennifer Allan. First she said Bachakes raped her, Boulter testified, but she quickly recanted and said the sex was consensual.
"She said she was upset with Mr. Buchakes because he had not paid for some lap dances," Boulter testified.
Filip suspected the reason she was upset was because he did not pay her for sex.
"Mr. Bachakes certainly should have known what to expect there," the judge said.
David Allan told police he knew his daughter was "scamming" Bachakes, but he described himself as nothing more than a middle man.
The father said "he told Jennifer on several occasions to stop pushing this, because it's going to come back to bite you," Boulter testified.
Robert Gaecke, attorney for David Allan, contends his client cannot be guilty of extortion because he never threatened Bachakes with a rape charge or anything else.
"He may have known what was going on, but he never made a threat," Gaecke said.
George Lyons, attorney for Jennifer Allan, contends she asked for Bachakes for money she felt was owed and then never asked a second time. Her father, Lyons contended, exploited the situation to keep squeezing money from Bachakes.
Prosecutors requested and Filip granted the addition of a prostitution charge against Jennifer Allan. Because of that charge, she will undergo court-ordered testing for sexually transmitted diseases. ..Source.. Brad Flory | Jackson Citizen Patriot

Rick Pitino's accuser charged with false rape claim
12-8-2009 Kentucky:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The woman accused of trying to extort money from Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino was charged Wednesday with retaliating against the coach by falsely claiming he raped her.
A federal grand jury in Louisville brought four new criminal charges against Karen Cunagin Sypher, including retaliation against a witness.
The FBI, Louisville police and prosecutors have said there was no basis for her rape allegations. She said the coach raped her in a criminal complaint filed after she was indicted in May on charges of trying to extort money from Pitino.
The grand jury also added two intent to extort charges and a second charge of lying to the FBI.
The sordid case became public in April when Pitino said he had told the FBI that someone had tried to extort money from him. Weeks later came the first indictment against Sypher.
Sypher has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of trying to extort money from Pitino and lying to the FBI. She is accused of demanding college tuition for her children, her house to be paid off and $10 million.
The coach subsequently told police that he had a consensual sexual encounter with Sypher in 2003.
A call to Sypher's attorney, James Earhart, was not immediately returned on Wednesday. Sports information director Kenny Klein referred questions to Pitino's attorney, Steve Pence. Pence did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
The new indictment adds allegations that Sypher had someone call Pitino on March 6 as part of an extortion plot. The indictment also alleges that Sypher had a threat mailed to Pitino on March 22.
The original indictment alleged that Sypher prompted threatening calls to on Feb. 26 and 28. The new indictment repeats that allegation.
The retaliation charge stems from a report Sypher filed with Louisville police in June. The indictment says Sypher made the charge knowing it would be harmful to Pitino.
The new lying to the FBI charge centers on statements attributed to Sypher that her relationship with a subject of the extortion probe was "strictly business." The grand jury charged that Sypher had an "intimate personal relationship" with the person.
Sypher's longtime friend, Lester Goetzinger, agreed to testify against her. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to clear his record of charges against him.
Prosecutors said Goetzinger left three voice mail messages on Pitino's cell phone between Feb. 26 and Feb. 28 at Sypher's request. Goetzinger's attorney, John Berry of Louisville, has said Sypher traded sexual favors in exchange for the calls. ..Source..

WA- Woman accused of threatening to claim rape charged with extortion
9-17-2009 Washington:
King County prosecutors have filed second-degree extortion charges against a Renton woman accused of threatening to report a former lover as a rapist if he didn't pay her $2,000.
In court documents, Mercer Island police contend that Jeanine Ann Gessner began harassing the man after he broke a date with her to attend a pre-season Seahawks game on Aug. 22.
An instant message exchange between Gessner and the man included in court filings shows a marked shift in her attitude toward him following the broken date. Initially loving, the writer whom prosecutors allege to be Gessner ultimately sent the man dozens of threatening messages.
When the man said he would take legal action if the harassment continued, prosecutors allege Gessner began threatening she would make a false police report accusing the man of raping her.
"Let's go coward," Gessner allegedly wrote. "Who are the police going to believe? You or me? You are out of your league(.) Don't start something that you will loose(sic)."
Prosecutors allege Gessner went on to demand $2,000 for her silence.
In charging documents, prosecutors note that she was convicted of third-degree malicious mischief in a separate April domestic violence incident involving another victim, and is the subject of two anti-harassment orders filed by two other men.
Gessner was arrested Sept. 3 and later released. ..Source.. by Levi Pulkkinen

UT- Trial set for woman accused of blackmailing man over rape charge
6-15-2009 Utah:
FARMINGTON -- A woman accused of blackmailing a man at Hill Air Force Base over a rape allegation will go on trial next month.
The 31-year-old woman appeared in 2nd District Court on Monday where she was expected to tae a plea deal. However, her attorney announced that she would like to take the case to trial.
Judge Michael Allphin scheduled a one-day bench trial beginning July 14.
The case is complicated, with the woman charged with second-degree felony theft by extortion. Her attorney said she is the victim of a rape and filed a police report in Seattle. Davis County prosecutors said any rape investigation has no influence on their case against her.
KSL does not generally name alleged victims of a sexual assault.
Court documents say the woman blackmailed the man out of nearly $50,000 by saying she would not report the alleged sexual assault to military authorities in exchange for the money.
The man initially paid, court documents say, but went to police when she asked for another $5,000.
The woman has insisted she is innocent, telling KSL NewsRadio at her last court appearance the allegations are "a false charge." ..Source.. by Ben Winslow
Woman accused of blackmailing man over rape claim
6-1-2009 Utah:
FARMINGTON -- A woman has been charged with felony extortion, accused of blackmailing a man at Hill Air Force Base over a rape allegation.
The 31-year-old woman appeared in 2nd District Court on Monday where her attorney said she was hoping to discuss a plea deal with prosecutors. She is charged with theft by extortion, a second-degree felony.
"She's charged in this case, but originally I think she was the victim of a rape," her attorney, Rich Gallegos, said outside of court.
According to charging documents, the Air Force's Office of Special Investigations (OSI) received a report in July 2008 of a possible blackmail involving rape allegations. Investigators were handed e-mails from a woman demanding "another" $5,000 from a Hill Air Force Base employee for allegedly sexually assaulting her.
"The victim admitted that he entered into a contract with the defendant where she would agree not to report the alleged assault to law enforcement if he would pay her $45,000," an investigator with OSI wrote in an arrest warrant affidavit filed with the charges. "OSI received a copy of the contract and verified through bank records that the defendant received and cashed personal checks from the victim totaling $46,000."
Outside of court Monday, the woman told KSL NewsRadio the allegations are "a false charge." "I would like to talk about it," she said. "But I have to have my attorney…"
KSL does not generally name victims of an alleged sexual assault. Gallegos said the woman filed a police report in Seattle over the alleged rape, which took place several years ago. He claims the alleged victim waited until the statute of limitations expired on the rape case before making an extortion claim.
Deputy Davis County Attorney Bill McGuire said any rape investigation would need to be conducted by Washington State police.
"If they wanted to pursue it, they could pursue it, but it has nothing to do with our situation," he said.
The woman is due back in court later this month. ..Source.. by Ben Winslow
