11-1-2008 Oklahoma:
Police say 24-year old Andrew Mathis drove his car into a crowd of people standing in a Brookside parking lot Saturday morning. The impact killed two men and injured five others. Paramedics took two victims to the hospital, one of them in critical condition.
The crash happened about 2 a.m. near 33rd and Peoria in the parking lot behind the old Delta Cafe. Witnesses told police they saw a red Chevy Camaro hit a group of people. Officers say Mathis ran away but was found hiding behind a building. A passenger in the car also ran away but later returned to the scene.
"It wouldn't have been so bad if when I looked over, I didn't see a guy under the car that was not moving," said one witness who didn't want to be identified. "All the guys that had been hit flew. It's something you only see in the movies. It's terrible."
Authorities have not released the names of the victims.
Investigators say Mathis was fighting with the victims prior to the crash. They also believe alcohol was involved in the incident. Mathis has been booked into the Tulsa County Jail on two counts of homicide and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
