Prison officials report death of Salem sex offender

4-6-17 Oregon:

A former Salem man incarcerated on sexual abuse and criminal mistreatment charges died unexpectedly at Two Rivers Correctional Institution Friday morning.

Michael Louis Shaw, 52, was found unresponsive in his bed shortly before 6 a.m., according to Oregon Department of Corrections officials. Medical staff began life-saving efforts to no avail, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Shaw entered Department of Correction custody in 2002 after he was convicted of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and three counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment in Marion County.

The same year, he was also convicted of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, four counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment and two counts of third-degree assault in Washington County.

His earliest release date was Sept. 28, 2025.

Shaw's next of kin were notified of his death.

Prison officials said the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an investigation, as per standard protocol for unanticipated deaths inside state prisons.

Two Rivers is a multi-custody prison in Umatilla that opened in 2000. It houses about 1,800 male inmates. ..Source.. by Whitney M. Woodworth
