AUSTIN, Texas — A 43-year-old man who had a year-long sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl he met online has been sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole under a relatively new law that targets people who transport young victims for sex.
A jury in Hays County in suburban Austin this week sentenced Robert Ritz under provisions of a 2011 law that allows the sentence for a person convicted of continuous trafficking of someone under 17 or continuous sexual abuse of someone under 14.
Ritz's attorney tells the Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/1nRjGnn ) the sentence is too harsh. The law's author, Democrat state Rep. Senfronia Thompson of Houston, says the measure was intended to combat prostitution and is being misapplied.
