ACLU questions NC sheriffs about whether they're in compliance with new federal prison law

4-7-2014 North Carolina:

RALEIGH, North Carolina — North Carolina sheriffs in 23 counties haven't responded to a request for written policies showing they're in compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act, but the head of their advocacy group says they may still be following the law.

The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union wrote to North Carolina's 100 sheriffs, asking they prove they're in compliance with PREA. Among its requirements is one that says states must provide separate housing for inmates under 18 years old.

In North Carolina, 16- and 17-year-olds can be tried as adults.

A follow-up letter says the sheriffs aren't trying to comply with PREA.

Eddie Caldwell of the N.C. Sheriffs' Association says the ACLU's questions weren't worded well. He doesn't know if the 23 counties are in compliance, however. ..Source.. by MARTHA WAGGONER
