Man Turns Himself In for Child Porn After Computer Virus Tells Him To

7-25-2013 Virginia:

A Virginia man who was apparently using his computer to solicit obscene photos from children turned himself in to police unexpectedly after he received an "FBI Warning message" that turned out to be a virus.
Police in Prince William County say Jay Matthew Riley, 21, was even kind enough to bring his computer with him to the police station so officers could search it for illegal content.
Investigators ultimately uncovered several photos of underage girls, and at least one correspondence with a 13-year-old from Minnesota.
Riley walked into the station on July 23rd, claiming he had received an electronic notice telling him to pay a fine or risk criminal investigation by the FBI.
The Woodbridge resident asked officers if he had outstanding warrants on file for child pornography.
He didn't, but by the end of the day Riley was charged with three counts of child porn possession, and one count each of using a communication device to solicit certain offenses involving children and indecent liberties with a minor.
Officers later determined that the message on Riley's computer wasn't authentic: It was generated by a virus.
Riley is currently being held without bond; his court date has yet to be released.
UPDATE: It seems Riley was taken in by a year-old scam known as Ransomware. Here's the FBI's intel on the virus. (Thanks Carlton!)
