3-5-2013 North Carolina:
RALEIGH, North Carolina — People convicted in North Carolina of human trafficking would have to register with local sheriffs as registered sex offenders in legislation that's cleared the state Senate.
Senators unanimously approved the legislation Monday evening. The measure would add the crime to the list of those requiring the registration if the trafficking involved minors or if it was committed with the intent of sexual servitude.
Such registered offenders must alert sheriffs where they live or if they move. They can't live near schools or day care centers or work in positions where they must interact with minors.
Bill sponsor Sen. Thom Goolsby of Wilmington says North Carolina is one of the country's top 10 states for sex trafficking.
