NY Counties shelve sex offender measure

10-23-2012 New York:

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Officials in the North Country are scrapping plans for a tri-county sex offender ordinance.

Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties considered setting limitations on where sex offenders could live after some residents said they worried about how close some sex offenders are to schools.

But the Essex County Attorney Dan Manning Attorney has advised against it, saying the state is working on a similar law and a local one would likely face legal challenges. "So basically it is my opinion that it would be fruitless and costly, that if we pass such a law, it's not going to pass muster in the courts," Manning said.

Similar ordinances in Vermont have also been shot down after being established. ..source.. by Matt Henson
