Registered sex offender running for Granite School Board

SALT LAKE CITY — A registered sex offender who spent five years in prison and is barred from visiting elementary or secondary school campuses is running for the Granite School Board.

Richard Wagner Jones is challenging incumbent Dan Lofgren.

Jones was convicted in 1990 of second-degree sexual abuse of a child and spent five years in Utah State Prison and another 10 years on probation.

The 67-year-old fulfilled court obligations but remains on the sex-offender registry.

Jones says that since completing probation, he's been a speaker at forums on how to prevent sex abuse.

He says there are some exceptions to the law keeping him from campuses.
