UPDATE 8-13: Those folks who seem to take issue with the portion of this post which claims the therapist requires the offender to admit to the crime, as explained below, folks you need to wake up, all sex offender therapy is premised on the offender admitting to the crime. The exact words used by therapists may differ but they all require offenders to admit to the crime, in some fashion. As indicated below may be based on the facts of the charge as indicated by the prosecutor, which the therapist would follow.
Petition of: Pam Baumstark
Please help me and my son. When my son was just 14 years old, he and a couple of his friends, mindlessly downloaded anything and everything pertaining to sex on Limewire. A few of these videos contained people under 18. The videos were "tagged" by law enforcement to catch child porn offenders. The law waited until he was 18, raided my house and turned his case over to the feds. His life is now destroyed. The judge did not give him prison time, but did sentence him to 40 years of parole. 40 years is cruel and unusual punishment considering the circumstances. He had to register as a sex offender, can not go anywhere where there are people under 18, has to attend sex offender classes where he must state that he gets sexual satisfaction by watching child pornography (even though he doesn't) and endure hearing members share about raping 3 year olds. He feels like a freak and his friends are avoiding him because of this charge. I fear for his safety and mental health. We had him tested... ..Source..

Something's fishy about this story. First, it is very doubtful that law enforcement would wait 4 years to investigate child porn cases (it happened when he was 14, but they didn't arrest him until he was 18). Second, seems like 40 years probation is unjustified for this situation. Leads me to believe there's more to the story. Third (and this is a big one), there is NO WAY a sex therapist would require a patient to state they are attracted to children (or sexually aroused by them). It's insulting to the profession to suggest such a thing. Fourth, petitioning the judge will do absolutely no good. They don't make the laws. They simply judge based on the laws as written.
"...there is NO WAY a sex therapist would require a patient to state they are attracted to children (or sexually aroused by them)"
Actually, the Sex Offender Treatment program is designed in such a way that the work required of those in the the program is as blanket an application as the laws that regulate sex offenders. persons in the program can not opt out of an assignment because they aren't attracted to children but much of the paperwork is written in such a manner that attraction to children is assumed and implied.
I agree that 40 years of probation (it couldn't be parole if the individual served no time) seems outlandish, then again there have been 100+ year convictions on similar charges if enough images are proven to fall under the law.
While I do think something is off with this woman's claims, I would not completely dismiss them. i would caution others considering signing that it could just as easily be a ruse to gain personal information from offenders beyond the States requirements.
what? someone is being treated unfairly by the law? no way!
This happened exactly as I wrote it. I would not concoct a story or mislead people about a serious situation such as this concerning my son. And Chance, what the heck are you talking about "gaining personal info about offenders"? I am reaching out for help for the injustice we are suffering. And yes, my son HAS to state he gets sexual gratification watching child porn in the sex offender group. Also,I am not petitioning the judge. I am petitioning the Federal Law makers. Open your eyes, there are many stories such as mine and my heart goes out to all those effected.
It is true that the statute of limitations is longer then 4 years for the federal child porn law. They legally could wait 4 years ...
When they did the search when he was 18 did they find any illegal items currently on his computer?
