2 Other Escapees Surrender, Officials Say
CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich. -- Authorities said one inmate is dead and two others have been captured after an attempted prison break in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Michigan Corrections spokesman John Cordell said three inmates overpowered a semi truck driver about 9:10 a.m. Thursday at the Kinross Correctional Facility in Chippewa County.
He said the inmates drove the truck less than 1,000 feet after crashing it through a nearby double chain-link fence.
Cordell said one inmate fled on foot after the vehicle stopped and was fatally shot. Two other inmates surrendered.
The semi driver was treated at the facility for non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Cordell said the facility that holds more than 1,800 prisoners remained on lockdown.
Michigan State Police are investigating.
Kinross Correctional Facility has the largest fenced area -- 113 acres currently enclosed -- of any state prison in Michigan.
The perimeter of the Kinross prison is composed of two perimeter chain-link fences monitored with electronic security devices, topped with razor-ribbon wire and is patrolled by armed personnel. ..Source.. WNEM.com
