Canada has had a review -for some time- of anyone entering Canada who has a felony, but the review usually occured if they want to reside there which requires more paperwork than for visiting.
9-8-2009 Canada:
CALGARY -- Convicted sex offender Leaford Lewin is back in his native Jamaica.
Canada Border Services Agency spokesman Lisa White yesterday said Lewin is no longer in Canada.
The one-time Calgary resident, who has been behind bars awaiting his deportation, won't be back, added White.
"He's personally barred from coming back to Canada," she said.
"We only confirm (deportation) once the removal has been confirmed."
Lewin was officially sent packing on Wednesday, but at a detention review hearing in July he told his mom he no longer wished to fight his expulsion.
Lewin was handed a four-year, three-month sentence for sexual assault with a weapon in 2006.
"You gotta let it go, mom, I gotta go," he said as his mother sat across from him inside a small Refugee Board of Canada hearing room at the Harry Hays building.
"I don't like it in prison anymore," he said.
"I did a bad thing, I committed a heinous crime," Lewin, 25, said.
At the time, the official presiding over Lewin's detention hearing imposed a publication ban on the nature of his crime because of threats Lewin had received while in the Calgary Remand Centre.
White said because of privacy issues, she could not say which country Lewin was deported to, but at an earlier detention review hearing it was divulged as Jamaica. ..Source.. by KEVIN MARTIN, SUN MEDIA
