Death sentence affirmed in Dru Sjodin kidnap case
MINNEAPOLIS — A federal appeals court has affirmed the death sentence for a convicted sex offender who kidnapped and killed a college student about six months after being released from prison.
In an opinion released Tuesday, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied Alfonso Rodriguez Jr.’s attempt to overturn his death sentence.
The Crookston, Minn., man was convicted in 2006 of kidnapping resulting in the death of Dru Sjodin (shuh-DEEN’) three years earlier.
Sjodin, a University of North Dakota student from Pequot Lakes, Minn., disappeared from the parking lot of a Grand Forks, N.D., shopping mall where she worked.
Her body was found near Crookston five months later. Authorities say she had been raped, beaten and stabbed.
Rodriguez previously served more than 20 years for offenses that included rape and attempted kidnapping. ..Source.. by Steve Karnowski

Yet another case that sparked a political ratchet job of "let's get tougher on sex offenders by making a National Registry." Okay, fine, now you've got your National Registry. What good would that have done for Dru? None! What good did it do for the girl kidnapped by Phillip Garrido? None! You click on a map that is full of useless dots with links. So what??? They would NOT have helped Dru or Jaycee. They won't help future victims of such violent crimes. They desensitize us and give us a false sense of security. They cause you to know who all ex-offenders are - some of whom did a stupid thing as a kid or young adult, yet they've gotten their lives together and are upstanding members of society despite being maligned on a useless registry with a select few who actually ARE a threat. And, we let down our guard thinking "this map will keep me safe." It won't. It never could have. It never will. Public registries protect nobody, and they hurt many! They are a joke - a VERY expensive one!!!
