IN- CPD says rape e-mail is untrue

7-10-2009 Indiana:

An e-mail circulating the Internet that warns about an alleged rape in the parking lot of a west-side Columbus business has been discredited by police.

Columbus Police Department believes the e-mail is related to a report received Monday alleging a rape in the parking lot in the 2000 block of Merchants Mile.

The e-mail states that a rapist in Columbus and "possibly the surrounding area" attacked a woman "in broad daylight" Monday.

According to the e-mail, the woman got out of her car to give the man directions. When she turned her back, he hit her over the head and dragged her into his car.

CPD investigators have determined the rape reported Monday was a false report based on evidence and an admission from the alleged victim.

"We don't have a serial rapist on the loose that we're aware of," CPD Lt. Joe Richardson said. "But people should always be cautious. Always have good precautions in place to keep yourself safe and those with you safe."

The case will be send to Bartholomew County prosecutor's office for review and determination of possible charges of reporting a false crime against the alleged victim.

Police encouraged recipients of e-mails, phone calls, text messages and other means of communication to make efforts to validate the contents before passing it along to others.

CPD said in the event of imminent danger to public safety that the department would use local media or other means to warn citizens.

However, officers also asked residents to take precautions whenever possible to avoid becoming victims. ..Source.. by Chris Schilling, Reporter
