BELLEVILLE, Ill. - The Salvation Army says it is closing its Belleville homeless shelter because a new city ordinance leaves it unable to guarantee the confidentiality of whoever stays there.
Part of the ordinance passed unanimously by Belleville's City Council in January requires the Salvation Army to turn over to the city or police the names of all people residing at the shelter at any given time.
A regional Salvation Army official says the ordinance violates the organization's confidentiality rules relating to the identity of its clients.
Will Decker, a regional spokesman, calls the situation "very unfortunate" and says the Salvation Army's community center in Belleville will remain open. ..Source.. by Chicago Tribune
