5-12-2009 Michigan:
Sometimes a little levity in life is needed, today Michigan provides that for us.
A new bill being proposed allows a judge to require a person convicted of certain crimes to pay for various costs related to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of their crime/s.
Today Senate bill 559 includes the following amendment:
AS PART OF THE SENTENCE FOR A CONVICTION OF ANY CRIME IN WHICH A CANINE UNIT WAS USED TO ASSIST IN THE ARREST OF THE PERSON CONVICTED, THE COURT MAY ORDER THE PERSON CONVICTED TO REIMBURSE THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY FOR CANINE UNIT COSTS.
(B) "CANINE UNIT" 1 MEANS 1 OR MORE DOGS USED BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY TO ASSIST A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IN THE INVESTIGATION OF CRIME. (C) "CANINE UNIT COSTS" MEANS COSTS INCURRED BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY ASSOCIATED WITH A CASE, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DEPLOYING, TRANSPORTING, FEEDING, SHELTERING, AND PROVIDING VETERINARY CARE FOR THE DOGS OF A CANINE UNIT.
After watching shows like America's Most Wanted and seeing those canines take a bite out of those ALLEGED criminals' arses, then to think that a judge may add salt to the offender's wound by making them pay for the "Dog Biscuit" treat for taking the offender down, now thats embarrassing....
Oh yes, one final note, look at the crimes it is applicable to, one has to do with "Flying while under the influence of .., being drunk." I wonder, would the offender have to pay for the canine's Superdog Uniform?
