CA- Police Use GPS To Track, Nab Alleged Rapist

This guy gives new meaning to the phrase dumb criminal. In addition, this case is proof that GPS units DO NOT PREVENT crimes.

5-13-2009 California:

MORENO VALLEY (CBS) ― This is a case for "Forensic Files."

Police in Moreno Valley arrested a registered sex offender Tuesday after reportedly tracking the suspect using his DNA and GPS for an alleged sexual assault committed against a Moreno Valley woman last year.

Cops arrested Ioane Solia, 45, of Beaumont, when he arrived at his workplace about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to sheriff's Sgt. Jaime Briones.

Solia allegedly kidnapped a woman at gunpoint last May 17 near a Thrifty gas station at Sixth Street and Beaumont Avenue, then drove her to the Moreno Valley area and raped her.

Police said after the attack she escaped to a nearby home and called 911.

Detectives at the sheriff's Moreno Valley station investigated and matched physical evidence to the suspect's DNA. They then used his ankle-monitored tracking device to determine where he was the night of the kidnapping and rape, Briones said.

As a registered sex offender on parole for a 1995 sex crime conviction, Solia was wearing the tracking device at the time of the attack, records indicate.

In the earlier case, Solia pleaded guilty to a single count of engaging in three or more sex acts with a child and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. ..News Source.. by CBS2.com
