AL- New bill to restrict sex offenders near campuses

5-8-2009 Alabama:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The Alabama Legislature has given final approval to a bill to prevent convicted sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a college or university.

The House gave final approval on an unanimous vote to the bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Jamie Ison of Mobile. The House agreed with an amendment added in the Senate that prevents sex offenders from loitering near a school bus stop.

The bill also prohibits convicted sex offenders from loitering within 500 yards of colleges and universities.

The bill goes to Gov. Bob Riley for review.

Existing law prohibits convicted sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of high schools or elementary schools.

The bill doesn't prohibit convicted sex offenders from attending a college or university, but they wouldn't be able to live on campus. ..News Source.. by WZTV Fox 17

I bet if someone came up with a bill saying sex offenders could not be within 1000 feet of any place, they'd pass it.
