PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Maine Legislature's Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee is considering a bill that would prohibit communities from passing ordinances governing where registered sex offenders can live and work.
Rep. Anne Haskell of Portland, the bill's sponsor, says her fear is that offenders who get bounced from location to location will eventually "go underground."
The Portland Press Herald says there are nearly a dozen communities in Maine that have imposed restrictions on where sex offenders can live and work.
Sen. Stan Gerzofsky of Brunswick said that in Florida there are a couple hundred people who're homeless because they can't get housing or jobs. ..News Source.. by Portland Press Herald
