4-17-2009 California:
The London Sun: California spends $152 million a year “treating” child molesters by holding birthday parties, karaoke nights and a pedophile’s version of American Idol.
Goofy does not begin to describe this story. Britain’s Louis Theroux filmed a documentary for the BBC on Coalinga State Hospital. That is him above inside. It looks like a mall.
The hospital is located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles in a rather scenic setting. It houses 800 child molesters whom the state is trying to cure at a cost of £134,000 a year per patient. (Its budget is listed at $152 million a year.)
The Sun, which did a feature on the airing of his documentary at 9 p.m. Sunday, London time, wrote “because it is a hospital, not a prison, the patients, who have committed revolting acts against children including rape and molestation, have human rights and are treated in luxury.”
The pedophiles spend their days playing ping-pong and watching DVDs. Some get porn. And then there is the aforementioned entertainment.
The treatment is hardly effective.

The Sun reported: “Although the official aim of the hospital is to rehabilitate offenders, 70 per cent of them refuse to co-operate with the in-house therapy classes. The hospital holds 800 patients and just 13 have been released back into the community.”
The 70% who refuse to cooperate — roughly 560 — out to be sent back to prison. Of course, that might cost the jobs of 70% of its 1,500 workers.
Theroux seemed to agree after visiting the joint. He told the Sun: “If therapy was really being embraced by a lot of the patients it would seem workable.
“But there wasn’t a lot of therapy going on as far as I could see.
“Because so many of them refuse to engage, it means Coalinga is basically a very expensive, luxury warehouse to keep these people off the streets for the rest of their lives. Most will never be released.”
Maybe if the pedohiles were not adressed as mister, followed by their last names, they might feel a little less entitled to porn and karaoke.
Theroux, who has two children under age 4, said the place creeped him out. Most of the therapists think it is useless, he said.
“It’s quite a controversial thing but several of the therapists said to me that paedophiles are born and not made… so you can no more cure them of being a pedophile than you can cure a person of being homosexual or heterosexual,” he said.
“The best you can do is to curb their behaviour. And some of the pedophiles I met said the same thing — that they will always have the urges they have, but that they are learning not to act on them.”
He preferred the British system. I do too.
“The British system is that when an offender finishes his sentence, he is released on the sex offenders’ register. If he then puts a foot wrong he is hauled back to prison. It’s a lot cheaper than a system like Coalinga — and a little bit more realistic,” he said.
I am guessing the recidivism rate in England is lower. ..News Source.. by BBC

This hospital is in a very rural part of California not at all scenic. I live in coalinga 5 miles from the hospital. They don't let them watch porn. My friends are police officers there. They say that is a lie.
