3-27-2009 Minnesota:
Acting quickly to avoid potential layoff notices to prison staff, the Minnesota Senate voted unanimously Thursday to cover a $16 million shortfall in the state's sex offender program.
The House is expected to vote on the issue early next week.
The Senate voted 49-0 after state Human Services Commissioner Cal Ludeman sought the quick action.
The sex offender program, which provides housing and treatment for offenders and has grown rapidly in recent years, will run short of money by Wednesday without the interim action, according to Senate officials. ..News Source.. by Dennis Lien
