2-19-2009 Nevada:
A legislative committee has killed a bill that would have changed lifetime supervision requirements imposed on convicted sex offenders. The bill had faced criticism that the changes would violate constitutional due process protections.
Lawmakers also are considering a bill that would ensure that civil rights aren't automatically restored to convicted sex offenders who are sentenced to a lifetime of parole.
That bill has been criticized by legislators and the American Civil Liberties Union, who say it goes too far. Lawmakers say the Division of Parole and Probation, which introduced the bills, should focus on a host of other problems they face, which were recently outlined in a legislative audit.
Auditors say that the Division has not adequately supervised high-risk offenders, which can lead to repeat offenses. ..News Source.. by MSNBC
