IN- Sex Offenders Paying To Register

While $50 a year doesn't sound like much for someone who has to register for life that gets mighty costly. If we were to assume a person was 40 years old, and lived to be 80, that is $2,000.00 and it is not tax deductible; or a juvenile, say 15 living to 80, $3,250.00. This amounts to double-dipping because local registries can get grants to cover expenses.

12-3-2008 Indiana:

EVANSVILLE - This is the first year Vanderburgh County is collecting money from sex offenders. And the sheriff says if it continues to be successful, the program will stick around.

Three hundred and fifty-eight sex offenders are registered in Vanderburgh County. Every one of them paid the county fifty bucks when turning in their registration form this year.

"It's $18,000 or $19,000 we weren't getting before," says Sheriff Eric Williams.

NEWS 25 asks where does that money go? Ten percent of that $50 goes to the state.

The rest? It pays the people who keep up the registry.

The sheriff's office spends more than $60,000 on two officers whose job is to monitor the registry: "they are now having to help foot the bill for the problem they've created."

But in these tough economic times, could offenders quit registering because they can't or won't pay? The sheriff says he hasn't seen that happen...yet.

"We'll monitor that. Because I think one of the most important things is ultimately we are making sure the people that need to be registered are registered," Williams says.

But the program has been around only one year. If the registration rates do drop, the sheriff says he's prepared to send sex offenders back to jail.

This year: 21 sexual predators didn't register and they're behind bars right now.

A few offenders on the registry have to register every three months. But the sheriff says that doesn't mean they have to pay every three months. The fee is annual. There is also a five dollar fee for moving. ..News Source.. by News 25

wisconsin charges $100.00 annually for all offenders on the registry. if they don't pay it within 60 days of receiving their notices, the state turns the bill over to the department of revenue and they take it from their tax returns.

I was in prison for 2 & a half yrs. for sex molestatin I hadn't committed. I didn't have the money to fight my case, & because of fear, I took the no contest plea. If I knew as much as I know today, I would have never taken the no contest plea. If you want to cost the taxpayers, next year, you can send meto prison, as I will not cooperate with hypocrites who can go on nothing but pure hearsay, not facts of any kind.

I did 2 & a half years in prison for molestation I hadn't committed. I will never pay the $100.00 ever again. You can throw me in prison & waste the tax payers expenses because of hypocrites that goes on nothing buy pure hearsay, no facts of anykind. You have an enormous amount of innocent people in prisons because of how you operate.
