MI- 196 non-compliant sex offenders nabbed in state sweep

11-21-2008 Michigan:

The Michigan State Police announced today that 196 non-compliant sex offenders have been arrested and another 682 additional arrest warrants were requested during the state’s fifth coordinated sex offender sweep.

The statewide sweep, which was conducted from Oct. 21 through 31, involved over 90 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies conducting residence checks on 3,194 registered offenders.

Dubbed Operation Verify, the initiative is aimed at increasing compliance with Michigan’s sex offender law. Since the first statewide sweep in the fall of 2005, 2,396 sex offenders have been arrested.

As of Nov. 18, there were 43,613 offenders on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry. On average, 200 new offenders are added to the registry each month. ..News Source.. by Joe Rossiter • Free Press Staff Writer
