VT- State Police Sex Predators

Registry laws define who is to do what according to the Legislature.

9-10-2008 Vermont:

Who should keep track of sex offenders?

-The Legislature says: Vermont's Department of Public Safety within which is the State Police

In Vermont, Parole officers from the Department of Corrections are supposed to keep track of sex offenders. That isn't working.

-Only those on parole or probation and they are doing that.

Local police departments are supposed to share information...when an offender moves, where they go....but that isn't working either.

-Only when someone asks for such information according to the legislature, and they are doing that.

Colonel James Baker of the Vermont State Police has a better idea.

He says "Let us do it."

Baker volunteered for this thankless but necessary task as he testified before Vermont’s House and Senate judiciary committees.

We thank him for that...and we hope the state will take him up on the offer.

The Colonel points out that his team has the temperament, tools, and skills to track released sex offenders – the most dangerous criminals, prone to repeating their awful crimes. He believes his team can handle the challenge and fix the system.

-Whether or not the State Police have all that is mentioned if they don't know who is responsible for what according to the will of the Legislature do the citizens of Vermont want to give the police more to think about? Vermont sex offender recidivism rate is 5% with treatment (see pg-149) which is in alignment with the lowest in the nation.
Obviously, the system is broken, so let’s give the Vermont State Police the chance to fix it.

We're pretty sure they can....and will.

That’s our opinion. What’s yours?

-Well, someone doesn't know what they are talking about, thats this writer's opinion!
