7-1-2008 Nevada:
The American Civil Liberties Union has won the first round in the fight over Nevada's new sex offender laws.
Monday in federal court, Judge James Mahan issued a preliminary injunction against the law, which was to go into effect Tuesday.
The law is designed to change the way sex offenders are ranked on their risk to re-offend, how often they need to report to law enforcement, and who is informed about their status.
"There have been people who have been told they have to move tomorrow," Maggie McLetchie with the ACLU of Nevada said. "There are people who are afraid they are going to lose their jobs. There are people who are just confused about what the law means. And what they can do."
The judge's ruling applies to the entire state, and means the laws put in place in 1998 will remain in force. Lawyers for the ACLU and the state and local agencies will be back in court August 26. ..News Source.. by News3
