IN- Guns in homes put more kids at risk than sex offenders

5-12-2008 Indiana:

If a sex offender moves into your neighborhood, you would probably freak out, even though studies reveal the vast majority of registered offenders do not re-offend nor are they a threat to re-offend.

We persecute these people by punishing them over and over, based not on facts but on hysteria and lies by the politicians and the media.

We make them move if they live too close to a school or park. But when your kids go next door to play, do you know if there are any guns in that home? If so, how are they secured? Do you even bother to ask? Probably not.

The child who killed his sister could have killed yours ("Police: Boy kills sister, 4,'' May 5). We hear of kids killing each other all the time playing with guns, yet we are more concerned with people who no longer are a threat to society.

One child is dead and another must endure for the rest of his life knowing what he did. Why don't the politicians and the media attack this problem? ..more.. Opinion by Nick Ames
