Area State Rep. Nan Baker recently introduced legislation that will help fund rape crisis centers in Ohio, as well as provide support for victims of sexual assault.
Republican Baker’s 16th Ohio House District includes Westlake, Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmsted and Fairview Park.
House Bill 108 would require each person who registers as a convicted sex offender on the Sex Offender Registration and Notification database to pay a $100 fee, which would then be deposited into the Rape Crisis Center Trust Fund, which is administered by the Ohio Attorney General.
At the end of 2012, there were 19,186 registered sex offenders in Ohio, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
The legislation also would add a representative of rape crisis centers as a member of the Safe Victims Assistance Advisory Committee, a state appointed committee which helps determine crime and victim policies and programs in Ohio.
“It’s been an honor to sponsor this important bill that will give the needed funding to our most underserved victims,” Baker said. “It is rewarding to know that this bill will assist hundreds of thousands of sexual assault victims regain their quality of life.”
The bill is co-sponsored by State Rep. Kirk Schuring, R-48, of Canton.
Recently, Baker and Schuring held a news conference with Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine to discuss the legislation and why it is needed to provide comprehensive rape crisis services throughout Ohio. They presented a five-year plan for providing services such as preventative care at rape crisis centers in every county in Ohio. ..Source.. by SCOTT MAHONEY
